Xanax is the brand name for a prescription-only medication that is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic attacks. It does this by decreasing the abnormal excitement present in the brain of patients that take the medication; these types of drugs are known as benzodiazepines.
Available in two different forms, a hard tablet and a concentrated liquid taken orally, Xanax is taken anywhere from two to four times per day. When using the liquid form of the drug, the prescribed number of drops should be squeezed onto a liquid or semi-solid food item, mixed, and then consumed immediately. generic xanax
Care should be taken when taking Xanax; it can be habit-forming and patients should never take more than the recommended dosage or take their medication more than the number of times per day as prescribed by their doctor. Additionally, patients should never suddenly stop taking Xanax as this may worsen their condition or result in extreme anxiousness, sleeplessness, or irritability.
Xanax is associated with a number of side effects, some of which are very serious and others more common. Patents should contact their doctors if they have any of the following symptoms that do not appear to be going away: drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, increased talkativeness, changes in sex drive, changes in appetite, weight changes, and difficulty urinating. More serious side effects include seizures, hallucinations, severe skin rashes, memory problems, confusion, coordination problems, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. If these side effects appear, patients should contact their doctor immediately.
Xanax should be stored away from heat and moisture, and out of the reach of children. Be sure to take note of the pills’ expiration dates, and throw away any medication that is either expired or no longer needed.
Xanax is also available under its generic name, alprazolam.
